Learning Opportunities

UNISON Learning and Organising Services (LAOS) co-ordinate Trade Union education and Life Long Learning opportunities for members. Courses available to members range from basic skills courses to professional qualifications.

UNISON courses are FREE and any childcare/dependent care or travel costs incurred will also be met for you. Many courses are accredited by the Open College Network and are recognised by many training providers/colleges as equivalent to GCSE or A Level standard.

Discounts are available for members wanting to study various vocational courses via distance learning. Courses include Accounting, Child Care and Early Years, GCSE/A Levels, Law, Marketing and Sports and Recreation Management and are provided by the Open University and National Extension College. The amount of discount varies with each course.

Bursaries and grants are also available to members studying Trade Union or Labour Studies and Undergraduate Open University Courses being undertaken at their own expense. Book grants are available to assist with the, sometimes quite high, cost of books required for further and higher education courses.

Open University Foundation Degree

Places are still available for the new Open University Foundation Degree which the OU has launched to meet the current and future skill needs of businesses and their employees. Until March 2011 employees, living and working in the East Midlands will be eligible for a substantial fee subsidy which can be as high as 100% depending on financial circumstances.
