Supporting members in times
of difficulty
When his partner became pregnant, local government worker Bernard wisely
arranged a repayment holiday with his mortgage provider. However, the
lender reneged on the deal when through know fault of their own they
missed part of one month's payment when Bernard's partner encountered
health problems. The bank initiated repossession proceedings. Armed with
advice from UNISON Welfare's debt advice provider, Payplan, Bernard made
the lender's solicitor see sense before the recent hearing.
Unbelievably, the solicitor reneged on this agreement before the judge who
wasn't fooled. "The judge asked if anyone stands up for the little man
today", said Jane Clack from Payplan. "Bernard and his partner got the
breathing space they needed following UNISON Welfare's grant of £1,000 and
Payplan's and the judge's support. Bernard was so proud of himself for
standing up to the bank."
